Fish Bits

Shop 1a
3 Contingent Street
Trafalgar
VIC 3824
(03) 5633 3188

We've grabbed take away fish and chips from Fish Bits in Trafalgar a few times. It's a block or so away from the pub on Contingent Street, and does have a few tables inside and out, but I don't think I've ever seen people eating in.

The flake, minimum chips and two scallops were all fine. The batter on the fish was a little on the soft side once we got it home, but fish itself was moist and flavorsome. The scallops always go down well and chips do the job.

The meal came to just under $20 with some grilled fish too. The service is prompt and the quality is consistent, so we'll probably go back if we fancy fish and chips while in the area.

Lucky Dumpling & Noodle Restaurant

921 Burke Rd
Camberwell,
VIC 3124

We stopped off in Camberwell to visit a shop, and as it was lunchtime we decided to grab something to eat. Initially we didn't find much that excited us, until we stumbled upon Lucky Dumpling and Noodle Restaurant, just up the hill from the station on Burke Road.

Inside the bamboo and ceiling fixtures gave the place an Asian feel, otherwise the decor was modern, with clean wooden tables and white walls.

We shared a couple of dishes, the first being a plate the fried vegetarian dumplings, which had satisfyingly crisp bottoms.

Inside the fillings included mushrooms and greens. and a bit more air than expected!

We also had a bowl of the chicken and prawn dumplings in chilli oil soup. A hint of prawn flavour did come through in the filling, but the broth needed some of the table condiments added to give it some more depth.

The service was pretty swift, which was welcome. Out the back you could peak into the room where the dumplings were being freshly made. The bill came to a reasonable $18.60, certainly not a bad off the cuff choice for a meal, although I'm rarely so it's likely to be a while before I go back.

White Guy Cooks Thai

Foodtruck - various suburbs in Melbourne's west

The White Guy Cooks Thai food truck has been plying its trade in the West for a few months, and getting a bit of a buzz. We hadn't managed to track it down, other than a random encounter when we were out for a bike ride and the truck was closed for their afternoon break.

To find out where the truck is, follow their twitter account or their facebook page.

Regular haunts include parks in Yarraville, Footscray and West Footscray, all not far from home for us, and when a Friday in Seddon came up, we planned to make our way down.

Various reasons meant it wasn't until about ten to eight that I finally arrived and found a menu full of items already sold out. As it was pretty much all that was available I grabbed the Chicken and water chestnut Gyoza with extra Asian Coleslaw.

The Gyoza were deep fried and looked perfectly golden and crisp. I took them home to share, and they were probably a little on the cool side after the 5 to 10 minute walk. They were enjoyable and nicely flavoured and the coleslaw was pleasant. Perhaps we'd been expecting too much, but it wasn't the knockout we were expecting.

The food was prepared quickly and the staff were very friendly. We will have to give the truck another chance, and get there a bit more promptly next time!

Satchmo's Den

57 Lonsdale Street (Rear)
Melbourne
Vic 3000

Satchmo's Den must have replaced Piadina Slowfood around 6 months ago, but despite passing by several times, I hadn't noticed! After a looked at their facebook page it seems they opened in July 2012.

We sat outside on the new benches. It was hot and sunny and good weather makes a big difference to the cafe, and the amount of useable seating, as inside it's fairly small.

We ordered inside at the counter, I had the bean enchilada’s, which were served with cheese, avocado/guacamole, sour cream  and a small side salad. The filling was wholesome and well flavoured and the dish put together well.

I'm pleased that Piadina Slow Food has been something equally interesting, serving good value, healthy food. THe service was prompt and friendly and I'd happily return.
