The Portland Hotel and James Squire Brewhouse occupies a quiet section of Russell Street between Little Collins and Bourke Streets. I've been there a couple of times recently with colleagues from work.
On both occasions the kitchen and service staff dealt with reasonably big groups pretty efficiently, whether we had ordered in advance or not.
On the first visit I had the pan fried home made gnocchi with James Squire Port braised rabbit, date and thyme ragout, peas and pecorino. The flavours were all there, it was all well cooked although it didn't stand out or seem that large for $22.50.
During our second excursion to the Portland I tried the Shark and Morton Bay Bug fish cakes, which came with a tomato and red onion salsa and rouille of olive oil with breadcrumbs, garlic, saffron and chilli. These were more enjoyable and slightly better value at $15.50.
Overall it is certainly a good venue for larger groups, although it seemed a little over priced for the dishes on offer, compared to other options available in the CBD.
