Wonderbao

4/19-37 A'Beckett Street
Melbourne
VIC 3000

We had a bit of trouble finding Wonderbao, (more active on facebook). Eventually we found it at the back of a small arcade opening off A'Beckett Street, and facing on to a laneway running off Little La Trobe Street.

Inside the small space, there is an open kitchen which takes about half the space, and on the other side of the counter a few stools against the bench table along the window. Being in a new building the fit out is modern and stylishly done. We ordered at the counter and managed to snag a couple of stools.

We waited for a few minutes for our orders to arrive. Linda's came first, she had chosen a pork and a veggie bao, the meat filled one being the larger of the pair. They rated highly enough for her to pick some up to take back for her hubby.

I had the veggie pack for $9.20 which offered 3 steamed delicacies. The Choi bao was warm and satisfying, filled with shitake mushroom, tofu and other veggies. The open fried silky tofu gua bao was more spectacular looking topped with pickled mustard, corriander, sweet soy and crushed peanuts, which all combined brilliantly. I finished off with the Taro bao.

Being a mix of a takeaway and eat in venue it's a a busy and buzzing place, with plenty going on. I enjoyed my meal and it's a good value spot to grab a bao in/near the city.
